Mill 13

Retranchement, The Netherlands

The house is located close to the famous windmill of Retranchement. The corn and hulling mill has been on this site since 1643 (the current mill was rebuilt in 1818 after it was blown over). The historical village of Retranchement, situated in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands and next to the Belgian border, is part of an ancient fortification line. Its former protecting walls are now a cultural-historical monument and nature reserve that is accessible through hiking trails.

am designs renovated the house with high focus on authenticity and pure lines. The main goal was to connect the architecture as much as possible with the surrounding nature and the ancient walls that are situated behind the house. The design was driven by the desire to increase the amount of natural light inside the house, in function to create a feeling of openness. The exterior design has been inspired by an enriching travel to Japan, with tranquility and balance as key aspects for the garden.

What we like

Saskia Boxy

2 minutes walk

You can't miss this cozy antique shop when you arrive at the picturesque village Retranchement. Expect a heart-warming welcome by owner Saskia and a beautiful interior full of antiques and vintage furniture and decoration.

2 minutes walk

A grill rotisserie in an old shed along the road where they serve fresh North Sea fish and matured meat. The grill is the central object in the restaurant.
Not only the fire determines the atmosphere, but also the cozy interior with its quirky look.

Pure C

15 minutes by bike

According to Sergio Herman, this is the restaurant of the future, where there is a perfect balance between quality on the plate and a relaxed, cosy atmosphere. Pure C is all about experiencing, sharing and tasting. The award of a Michelin star in 2011 makes it clear that Syrco Bakker is the right chef for this concept.

15 minutes by bike

Traditional fish and seafood dishes with the touch of Sergio Herman. Many of the dishes that are served at AIRrepublic were once on the menu at the restaurant of Sergio's father. Think of the fish soup that was previously served in Oud Sluis, marinated mussels, oysters with champagne sauce and freshly made langoustines. Open from Friday until Tuesday for lunch and dinner.

15 minutes by bike

The sunny terrace is the ideal place to drink or eat something during a beach day. They focus on Zeeland products, as they do in the AIRrepublic restaurant but with more simplicity. Think of a pistolet with gray shrimps with a glass of cava, or a good croque monsieur with cheese from the Vos family from Biervliet. Open for lunch or take-away during the weekend.

Pine House

15 minutes by bike

Under the watchful eye of Sergio Herman, Pine House offers a rich breakfast buffet with fresh, local products and a unique composition of sweets from the pastry chef's own bakery. Open every day until 11 AM.

15 minutes by bike

A dining-bar concept from Sergio Herman, inspired by Japan, located in the rear part of the Strandhotel's lobby. You can enjoy a gastronomic dinner at the intimate niche benches and small tables overlooking the bar and open kitchen. The balcony accommodates guests who only want something to drink and Blueness also has a unique private dining room that seats 12 guests that can be reserved exclusively. Open daily (lunch possible during the weekend).

Etablissement 1880

10 minutes drive

Gastronomic restaurant  with warm interior and enthusiastic service. The Zeeland-tinted menu is a surprise menu, so it can be served even more creatively and with fresh products. The menu consists of a diversity of regional and seasonal products, presented as culinary art pieces.

Het Zwin

The new semi-paved four-meter-wide bicycle and hiking trail offers you an unparalleled view of "het Zwin" and the surrounding polder landscape. It takes you from the reception gate on the Flemish side, the Zwin Nature Park in Knokke-Heist, all the way to Cadzand-Bad where the other reception gate is located (or the other way around). Along the route, there are several rest areas with benches to enjoy the surroundings at your leisure.

Cadzand Sports

Perfect address for both advanced and beginning kite surfers. You can take individual lessons, but also an introductory course, trial lesson, a complete course or private lessons. The lessons include all the necessary equipment and are mainly given at the Zwinstrand in front of the beach pavilion De Zeemeeuw in Retranchement.

Moio Beach

15 minutes drive

At Moio beach you can participate with fun group activities (golfsurf, powerkite, sup, bumper soccer, beach lacrosse...). The large terrace at Moio restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing drink or a relaxed lunch or dinner with fresh and seasonal ingredients.
